Hello, my name is rebecca caridad and I am the lady behind the manzanita paperie. I was first introduced to calligraphy by a woman named Miriam. I lived on her and her husbands farm in upstate New York when I was 16. I remember being instantly smitten with the idea of making letters art. I had always been somewhat neurotic about my handwriting and poetry and creative writing is a passion I have had from a very young age.
Years later I decided to go to college in pursuit of a creative writing degree. It was there that I took my first calligraphy course with Laurie Doctor. I studied broad edged pen calligraphy and book arts with her for several years. In these classes we focused a lot of letter structure and consistency with in our work. The idea of our projects being correct and incorrect was prevalent, but Laurie was also amazing at letting us push those boundaries by writing with found objects such as twigs and rocks.
After graduating I put the medium down for a few years while I pursued other things. In the spring of 2013 my interest in calligraphy was sparked again by seeing all the lovely modern calligraphy around the internet. I decided I should take a refresher course and try my hand at the pointed pen and brush lettering. I took Melissa Esplin's online class, Modern Calligraphy. I highly suggest this course to anyone interested in trying calligraphy out for yourself!
Now I offer custom calligraphy services ranging from logo design, invitation design, original art, tattoo design, and am always looking for new ways to use calligraphy and illustration in interesting ways.
